Coaching and supervision are both forms of consulting that focus on the professional development of people. Here are the main differences between the two:

  • Supervision , on the other hand, is a structured reflection of professional practice. It focuses on continuously maintaining and improving the quality and competencies in professional work.

2. Target group :

  • Coaching is often aimed at managers and individuals in situations of professional change. It can also take place as part of personnel development.

  • Supervision is particularly relevant for people with and without leadership and management responsibilities in advisory , teaching or healing professions.

3. Focus :

  • Coaching is usually event-related and focuses on individual development and expansion of the ability to act in everyday working life.

  • Supervision rather continuously considers the professional role, cases, conflicts in the field of action and the reflection of professional action.

4. Time frame :

  • Coaching can be short-term, often with 3 to 5 sessions.

  • Supervision is more long-term, with 5 to 15 sessions.

5. Methodology :

  • Both formats use similar methods and follow certain “schools”, such as “systemic supervision” and “systemic coaching”.

  • Coaching has its origins in sports and working with high performers. Today it is mostly aimed at managers.
