Supervision has outgrown it's origin

Over time, the understanding of supervision has changed considerably. Here are some important changes:

1. Early roots in social work:

- Originally, supervision was closely associated with social work. It was used to reflect on the relationship between social workers and their clients.

2. Extension to other professional fields:

- Over the years, supervision has moved away from pure social work supervision and has become a broader counseling format.

- It now extends to different professional fields such as healthcare, education, business and administration.

3. Professionalization and standards:

- The founding of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Supervision e. V. (DGSv) (German association for supervison) in 1989 set standards for supervision training.

- The DGSv has helped to establish supervision as a professional form of counseling and consulting.

4. Diverse areas of application:

- Today, supervision is not only used for individual counselling, but also for teams, organizations and managers.

- It is used for quality assurance, conflict resolution and personal development.

5. Integration of coaching and organizational consulting:

- Supervision has evolved and increasingly integrates elements of coaching and organizational consulting.

- It not only considers individual aspects, but also systemic contexts.

Overall, supervision has developed from a specialized social work-related practice into a versatile consulting approach that is used in various contexts.
